There's an old story about a young man who made a living selling hats, traveling between villages.
One hot afternoon, he was walking through a field, feeling tired, and decided to take a nap. He saw a mango tree, its branches lush and shady. So he placed his bag containing the hats beside him and drifted off to sleep. When he woke up, he found all the hats were gone!
"Oh, God!" he exclaimed. Suddenly, he heard a noise above him. Looking up, he saw the mango tree teeming with clever monkeys, leaping and bounding, each wearing a hat of various colors! He shouted at the monkeys, and they shrieked back; he made faces at them, and they made faces back; he threw stones at them, and they rained unripe mangoes down on him.
The young man was utterly dejected. He casually took off his hat and threw it to the ground. Look! The foolish monkeys copied him, throwing their hats off their heads as well. The young man wasted no time, quickly gathered his hat, and continued on his way.
Fifty years passed. His grandson, John, had taken over the business, selling hats from village to village.
One day, after a long journey, he felt very tired and happened to see a mango tree, its branches lush and shady.
John decided to rest for a while, so he sat down under the tree and soon fell fast asleep. When he woke up, he found all his hats gone! John looked up and saw a group of monkeys sitting in the mango tree, wearing his hats on their heads.
John remembered the story his grandfather often told him.
“Yes! I can get those monkeys!” John said. "I'll make them imitate me so I can get all my hats back!"
John waved to the monkeys, and they waved back; John started dancing, and the monkeys danced in the tree too; John tugged at his ears, and the monkeys tugged at their ears; finally, John threw his hat on the ground…
Just then, a monkey jumped down from the tree, snatched the hat John had thrown, and quickly climbed back up, making faces at the furious John and shouting, "Fool, do you think you're the only one with a grandpa?"
